Through the Ice Caves of Dragon Mountain by QuizzicalKisses Through the Ice Caves of Dragon Mountain by QuizzicalKisses
Take my staff, Spike.

Oh man, this took freakin' FOREVER. 4 full days of nonstop painting, good god I hope never to spend that much time on a single piece again >.<
That being said, I think this turned out really nice, I love Twi's face (I might upload some detail shots later if people want it) and somehow managed to make purples and greens work without being too cartoony.

And if you're curious as to why Twilight's not a horse like in the other pic, its cause she transforms into a unicorn to ease travel time, and she's not above giving old Beefspike a ride every so often.

Been such a long time since Beefspike, I hope you guys enjoy it :D

Hey man, 4 days? At least you get to work straight.

Guys like me, I've got pending artworks up the wazoo that I started months ago...and its not even half this good.

Can't work straight. Run out of artistic endurance or inspiration or physically just got tired or hungry or...ugh.

How do you and artists like you do it?
QuizzicalKisses Featured By Owner Jun 6, 2014
Actually I got tons of work that never get off the drawing stage, these works are just me hashing it out until I have no more patience for it, haha. All artists have tons of work they want to do but just can't get the creative juice for it, we just have a few works that stand the test of patience that much longer than the rest.

That. Is. Awesome. I usually hate or at best tolerate it when the ponies are made more human, be it just slightly or full conversion. But this is great. You now have the distinction of making the only such artwork I really, really like.

Though I can always nitpick and question why Spike is suddenly the big guy, I don't really care.

If MLP was like this and had a story outside the values friendship (because I learned the value of friendship at ten) I would watch it, but it would have to be violent as Fist of the North Star and villains like JLU.

I also like that you gave her proper clothes instead of the overused chain mail bikini or similar stuff that won't protect her from the cold at all.

Chain mail bikini's have their place, but not in the frozen peaks of DRAGON MOUNTAIN!

Legends once told of a treasure, the Heart of Equestria, that was lost in one of the many wars that pervaded Discord's rule over the land. An artifact capable of storing and harnessing immense magic, wars were fought to decide who would even fight wars over it. Now it, and even those legends are all but vanished. All that remained in the whole realm was a small, untitled journal rotting away in the darkest corner of the Canterlot Royal Library.

Naturally, the resident bookworm was the first to read it in many millennium.

The cryptic ramblings of a madpony littered the crumbling pages, with few phrases making any sense and most even less. One page, though, held relatively sane notes and an illustration that left Twilight Sparkle breathless: what appeared to be a brilliantly ornate gem trapped within a wall of crystalline ice and gold. Anyone who recovered the Heart would be the powerful being in the world, and who else but the disciple of a goddess? Few could handle that power, and fewer still would see that it should not be used for war or conquest, but the advancement of science! It was her duty to find and protect it!

Twilight left in secret with her everlong companion, Spike, towards long-forgotten trails hinted at in the insane ramblings of the journal. Weeks passed, then months. Fearing that the journal was merely fantasy, Twilight almost gave up hope, until a chance slip into a ravine restored her faith in the mad writer. Within the ravine was a small shrine, untouched by ponykind or the untamed natures of the borderlands, and carved onto the shrine was the distinct silhouette of the Heart of Equestria, and below it two words: Dragon Mountain. Twilight almost returned to her despair: Dragon Mountain was in the heart of the frozen Dragon Wastes, far to the north. Reaching it meant crossing range upon range of deadly forest, scorching plains, and, worst of all, every dragon that saw fit to remain active after the Fluttershy War. The quest was daunting.

Years passed in this leg of the pair's travels. Raids were thwarted, wars were nearly started, and even attempted genocide could not stop the determined Twilight from reaching Dragon Mountain, but the hardest part was only beginning. You see, the only way to the peak of Dragon mountain was up cliffs of knife-sharp ice and rock, through blizzards that could freeze all but the most hardy beings, and monsters whose names could not even be comprehended by any mortal intellect.

Twilight and Spike got it done, though, through a combination of the greatest magics and fighting skill seen on this world, and finally reached the summit. There stood an opening to a labyrinthine cave, tunneling deep into the mountain. By this time, though, Twilight could feel the presence of the Heart, and could use ancient pathfinding magic to discover the way.

Then, following days in the labyrinth, Twilight and Spike entered a cavern and finally beheld the Heart of Equestria in all of it's majesty. The journal from the library could do no justice to the radiance, the glory, the sheer impossibility to how the light seemed to emanate from within the Heart itself. This was trivial to Twilight, though, because of it's last and most prominent characteristic.

She hadn't been expecting it to be so BIG...
QuizzicalKisses Featured By Owner May 26, 2013
Man, that is an awesome read :D Definitely an interesting hook for an epic fanfic :)

Although to be honest, this visually driven person read the last line first and had terrible, dirty thoughts, and is thoroughly ashamed of himself. ^^;
